Wine closures, a debate: Cork versus screw cap - Masterclass presented by Philip Cox, CEO Cramele Recas

Cork versus screw cap, alternatives: vinolok? A subject that is at least interesting and causing a lot of of debates, reactions, various opinions, studies and statistics. The second masterclass of the WineUp Fair in Transylvania that we officially announce will generate a heated debate regarding which is the best type of closure for wine bottles. Some of the questions that will have detailed answers during the presentation: Why is the cork still the supreme leader? Is it because of tradition or the natural connection that is being done between wines and cork closures or…? Is the screw cap gaining more and more attention because of it practicality and modernity? How many things do we know about the vinolok as an alternative and who is using it? How much does each type of closure influence the ageing of the wine?

Over the years, using the cork generated numerous studies and discussions, especially because of its involvement in storing and ageing wine. One of the biggest concerns in the specialized industry consists of overpassing the negative influences that it can have over the quality of the wine. Although the screw cap closure was invented in the fifties, for many years it was associated with bad-quality wines; a change of image came only recently when some producers from Australia and New Zeeland decided to use the screw cap on all kinds of wine, including premium wines. This caused a change of perception that determined more producers worldwide to use more often the screw cap, especially for white wines and red wines made to be consumed young.

The vinolok is another alternative available, one that, according to its promoters, offers a stable development for wines, safe from the danger of contamination and it also has a special and innovative design.

All these are elements that we will have the opportunity to discuss with our guest, a specialist who knows many things about wine closures and who successfully uses in his business the cork, the screw cap and Vinolok.

The masterclass will be presented by Philip Cox, CEO of the Recas Winery, an englishman from Bristol successfully adopted by the Timis vineyards beginning 2000, when he decided to begin his adventures with the wines from Recas. He is the head of one of the biggest Romanian exporting wineries and  a producer who uses more than one version of wine closures. His expertize in this matter is validated by a direct and important contact in the external wine markets, where Philip coordinates a line of highly appreciated wines in the UK, the I Heart wines, closed with screw cap.

The discussion with Philip will be very thought-provoking and it will include a comparative wine tasting of wines and their different types of closures. The participants in Philip’s masterclass will have a unique occasion of tasting a world class high value wine from a classic wine producing country that is bottled under screwcap.
